Our story
Feldur Verkstæði
Feldur Workshop is an Icelandic family-owned company that specialises in the design and sale of high-quality products made from fur and sheepskin. The store is located at Snorrabraut 56, where we welcome you into a warm and inviting world of Feldur.

It all grew from the craft.
Heiðar Sigurðsson, one of the founders of Feldur, was only 17 years old when he began apprenticing with the furrier Steinar Júl. In his early twenties, he moved to Sweden, where he studied fur craftsmanship, fur design, and also took courses in tailoring. Alongside his studies, Heiðar worked with several furriers in Tranås, gaining valuable experience.
After returning home, he began designing suede coats for the fur department of Sambandið, Hekla. In addition, he started sewing garments himself from suede and mink fur, selling them under the name Safalinn for some time.
Around 1990, the fur industry and fur craftsmanship in Iceland almost completely disappeared, and Heiðar also turned to other work. Then, in 2006, Heiðar and his wife Kristín joined forces and revived Safalinn, starting in the basement of their home.
The focus shifted away from domestic production, and they began building strong relationships with manufacturers across Europe, producing a variety of beautifully designed products. The whole family became involved, with the siblings competing to complete different projects.
The company grew steadily, and before long, Heiðar returned to repairing fur coats and other fur items. He was joined by Ása, who had worked with him at Steinar Júl’s workshop in their youth. Ása remains an important part of the company to this day.
Heiðar also took on various custom tailoring projects, including work for theatre productions, films, weddings, and more.
Safalinn eventually became Feldur Verkstæði. The company moved from the basement to a warehouse on Sundabraut, and later the shop was opened at Snorrabraut 56.

We have always placed great emphasis on craftsmanship and doing things well. Unlike what is common in the fashion industry, we are not seasonal and can produce according to demand. We do not hold regular sales to make room for new products; instead, we allow our products to have a longer lifespan. In this way, we offer timeless design, where the material is allowed to stand out and be appreciated. We also place strong emphasis on informing our customers about proper care, ensuring that each product lasts as long as possible.

The Life on Snorrabraut
When Feldur Workshop finally opened at Snorrabraut 56, it created an opportunity to build a world around the products, allowing them to be appreciated as they were meant to be. The store has retained its charm since 2014 and has remained largely unchanged ever since. The atmosphere on Snorrabraut is defined by warmth and a welcoming presence. We find few things more rewarding than welcoming our customers and helping them choose a piece that will keep them warm for years to come. No two items are exactly alike, as we work with natural materials, each imperfect in its own perfect way. Whether choosing mittens or a fur coat, it is a pleasure to see how every piece is truly unique. We therefore encourage you to visit us, experience the products firsthand, and find the piece that is meant for you.
The workshop is also located on Snorrabraut. We truly enjoy welcoming customers who bring in fur coats that are many years old, often carrying rich personal stories. Heiðar still takes on the work of altering them so they can last for many more years. We also do our utmost to accept and repair older items purchased from us. In doing so, we want to emphasize the importance of taking good care of the things we own.

Why we choose leather and fur?
Tanning and working with hides is an age-old tradition in Iceland, though few specialize in the craft today. From the very beginning, we have placed strong emphasis on carefully considering every step of the production process. Leather and fur is a super durable material, that bodes well with our emphasise on longevity. We are always mindful of how we use our raw materials, doing everything we can to make the most of them. This is reflected in the final result, which is often shaped by the natural form of the material itself, expressed through distinctive lines and custom-designed cuts. As fur is a valuable material that comes from living beings, we treat every single piece with respect and take care to ensure it is put to good use. For example, we work with producers who specialize in creating panels from small fur pieces, where even the smallest fragments are stitched together and fully utilized. Almost nothing is ever discarded, every offcut is given a new purpose, forming new patterns and designs. We also create products for all age groups, allowing leftover material from larger pieces to be used, for instance, in children’s items.
